牛津大學知名佛教學者及漢學家，Yehan Numata佛學講座教授、牛津大學貝利奧爾學院（Balliol College）院士左冠明（Stefano Zacchetti），於2020年4月29日病逝，享年53歲（1968-2020）。1994年中國四川大學中文學士， 1999年獲得義大利威尼斯大學博士學位。研究領域包括：早期漢譯佛典、梵文和漢文大乘佛典、漢譯佛典的歷史，以及中國佛教（特別是早期的中國佛教註疏）。2012年加入貝利奧爾學院。
曾任教於日本創價大學國際佛教學高等研究所、義大利威尼斯Ca’ Foscari大學等校。並曾於2018年應邀來臺，參加由佛光大學佛教研究中心與臺灣大學佛學研究中心主辦之「《大智度論》的世界」國際學術研討會」，會中發表 The Da zhidu lun 大智度論 as a Commentary: Its Typology, Background, and Exegetical Techniques。重要代表著作為：In Praise of the Light: A Critical Synoptic Edition with an Annotated Translation of Chapters 1-3 of Dharmaraksa’s Guang zan jing. The International Research Institute for Advanced Buddhology – Soka University (Bibliotheca Philologica et Philosophica Buddhica VIII), Tokyo. 2005.
Dame Helen Ghosh (Master of Balliol) writes: ‘Our first thoughts are, of course, with his family in their terrible loss. The loss to us as a community is not just of his outstanding scholarship and inspiring teaching, but also of the warmth, good humour, friendship and boundless curiosity with which he enriched our lives in College. We will miss him enormously.’
