Description
The volume attempts to display and explore new methods and perspectives in cultural interaction studies by exemplary articles in religion, history, geography, language, literature, Sinology, and Japanology. The 18 articles are divided into six sections under the titles of “New Directions in Regional Studies”, “New Trends in Humanities Studies”, “Material Circulation and Cultural Transmission in East Asia”, “China’s Experience of Cultural Interaction with the West”, “Transformation of Japanese Scholarship from Early Modern to Modern Times”, and “The Wisdom of Selective Adaption and Constructive Dialog”. Of the eight prize winning contributors, Ge Zhaoguang is widely acclaimed for his book What is China: Territory, Ethnicity, Culture, and History (2018), and Nakanishi Susumu is known for his profound scholarship on ancient Japanese literature and deep concern about preserving Japan’s tradition in peace-making, which motivated him to propose the reign title “Reiwa” for the new Japanese emperor. The reign title was adopted and has been in use since May 1, 2019.
